Challenge:
For this project, I aimed to fuse retro practical effects with modern digital techniques by recreating Overwatch's Ana Amari in a cyberpunk-inspired environment. The goal was to capture the gritty, neon-lit atmosphere of a futuristic hideout, using background projection—a tribute to classic filmmaking—while working within a limited physical space and keeping post-processing to a minimum.
Solution:
To emulate the look of rear-projection from vintage cinema, I used an LED monitor as a dynamic backdrop and paired it with a reflective acrylic sheet to create depth in the "floor" area. A portable mist generator added atmospheric haze, accentuating the contrast of light and shadow. In post-production, I enhanced the scene with purple tones and neon glows, blending digital effects with the in-camera projection to strengthen the cyberpunk aesthetic.
Result:
The final image combines analog and digital elements, bringing Ana Amari into a moody, tech-noir setting. The reflective surfaces and mist interplay with the projected backdrop, while subtle post-processing amplifies the scene’s neon tension—showing how classic techniques can bring a fresh, contemporary feel to character storytelling.
